"QUAIRELEURS" FELUY OF (1400-1600)
MEMORY OF OUR CAREERS
THE "QUAIRELEURS" FELUY OF (1400-1600) Alain
GRAUX
All acts of life Feluysiens of the old regime passed before the stately progress of the parish Feluy, that is to say during Feluy of Escaille of Croquet, the tenaules of Good Hope and Rocq. It is through
chirographs preserved in State Archives at Mons, from 1392 and written by the Mayor and aldermen of the town, which includes the quarry operators, we can realize the lives and careers of the men who mined the stone and / or made commercially and are recorded in these acts distant.
The first known mention of a date stone merchant 1422, She reported a career that was known previously (see No. 19 of this article). It should not be alone as in 1428, another career is mentioned, it is already a "heritage" (see No. 3), which proves the absence of other texts multiplicity of careers and length of extraction of stone Feluy.
This exceptional documentation is incomplete, however. All acts are not reached us. This important source of information speaks only of more or less wealthy people, who bought, sold or tested land or property, leaving the "little people", workers with no property or having the force of his arms.
operators of stone are known by various names such as "quaireleurs", "master stonemasons," "masters of career" or more commonly "Stonecutters". These songs do not necessarily hide the hierarchy within the profession, the various titleholders may be given following separate acts (Ex: Jehan Nopère, No. 24 - Arthus Ernault, No. 50).
