2 °. THE CARTONNERIE
Charlemagne Quenon Leopold, owner and industry (born in La Bouverie on 24-11-1858) remained Frameries where he ran a leather factory and leathers, he bought Candy Feluy in 1910. He put the plant in a state to create a cardboard. The plant was ready on the eve of the first world war came to disturb the smooth running of business.
Unfortunately the Germans ravaged the factory, they took all the copper objects, materials and leather used for transmissions. For the duration of the war, they made a munitions depot on the premises and parquèrent hundreds of English prisoners in the facility.
Only l92I the cardboard knew his first start.
May 2, 1921, Mr. Quenon then created a partnership under the name ICE AND CHARLEMAGNE QUENON before the notary of Frameries Ed Lucas.
attendance were:
- Charlemagne father Leopold.
- Charlemagne Remacle Florent Quenon, son, director of the Plant Frameries.
- Gerard Quenon Renaud, director of industry Frameries (Frameries born on 20-8-1894).
- Quenon Pierre Abel, director of industry Frameries.
The company is:
a) manufacturing, industry and commerce of the shoe, including the preparation, manufacture and trade of hides and skins, including the industrial plant located in Frameries, 30 John Street Devoldere.
b) manufacturing, industry and trade in paper, paperboard and cardboard, including the industrial plant based in Feluy path Arquennes Feluy. The
headquartered in Frameries. The duration of the company is 30 years.
This had a cardboard machine continues to manufacture the boxes, which was installed by the factories Chantraine Nivelles. The water required to manufacture Lacroix was pulled from the hole. The raw materials arrive by boat or train. Three teams of workers employed in the manufacture of straw board, card and board raw paper with glue on one or both sides in different formats that went to every corner of Belgium and France for making box, 20 tons of cardboard were coming out daily. The tools included
tanks preparations dough to mix it with lime, grinding wheels, instruments refining batteries, mixing vats, machine making paper with felts and sieves, dryers are crop, and then put the card in size and weighed the boxes in packages of 25 kg.
In 1926, Gerard Quenon bought the Saint-Georges Feluy order to take the waters to supply the cardboard. The level of the road at the bottom of the quarry, there are 38 meters deep. An artesian well was drilled. Reaching 78 meters deep, it touched the water table. A column of water spurted out of 4.5 meters.
Quenon gentlemen did nothing but supervise the operation of the plant, Cartiaux Felicien (born in the Flawinne 24-10-1883) who was head of court in 1914, became head of production in l92l and was in fact the chief principal officer plant. It stopped operations in 1956 and was replaced by Mr. Crinckx was colorist.
The plant took the extension, we add a paper mill. It is also the name of
CARTONNERIE AND STATIONERY FELUY-ARQUENNES.
The new workshop was built in 1930/1932, it contained a machine continues to manufacture all grades of paper from white to black, for packaging, for printing and writing from 42 up to 250 sqm. The latter began to turn from 1932. Pulp wood from Scandinavian countries. The raw material came to the formulation in different machinery (such as fiber, wheels batteries) for a first refining. From there it passed through a mixer then into a mixer and then into the conical refiners, this operation it was heading towards three cleaners to arrive in the manufacture of paper.
This was done with a machine where the paste was deposited on the canvas. There was then rolls égouteurs depapier for fine quality. The paper continues in the drying, finishing and winding. Paper processing ended phases manufacturing in a different room where rolls and sheets of all sizes were then packaged. The paper did not normally stocked, he went directly from the factory, often to France.
plant stopped during World War II-194L 15-12 May 1945. By 1955, substantial transformation took place on the machine continues, we installed a pulp collector that challenged directly the excess dough back in the tub. Three to four tons of paper per day made by two teams, they moved 15 tonnes of paper per day with 3 shifts of workers.
All these machines were powered by 4 steam boilers stamped 10 kg which was added a steam stamped at 30 kg, about 1932. The machines were operated transmissions. The plant
knew only sporadic social movements. It did strike in August 1950 when the royal affair in 1956, eight days of strikes, protests took place because the boss wanted to keep a foreman colorist against the advice of workers who were in conflict with it.
mismanagement of the plant and increasing income were the reasons for closing the factory despite a well-stocked order book.
factory closed its doors in February 1958 sending 250 workers unemployed. The machines were sold to the factory Intermills in Malmedy. The trustees introduced a request to use the Saint-Georges to dump the slag.
They rented the factory to a dealer feluysien.
3 ° THE JAM
Ladrière Alfred Albert Joseph, merchant (born in the Feluy 24-04-1898) plied his trade at 28 Grand-Rue Feluy he married Alphonsine Mattagne (born in Wavre in 1903).
They rented the old cardboard and stationery to create a jam. They gave as an ensign brand LAMA (Ladrière-Mattagne and son).
They made corin plums, apricots and apples were the fruit in syrup. In addition, they roasting coffee. The plant was also used as a repository for wine and port wine they imported. Later another part of the buildings used to store colonial goods.
Alphonsine Mattagne died January 19, 1965. Alfred Ladrière still living the 39 Chaussée de Nivelles in 1972. He is described as an importer, he lives with his son Guy (born in the Feluy l8/08/1927), commercial director, and his wife Colette Vivier. It was then that buildings serve as repositories for various companies (auto parts, furniture, etc.)..
In 1980, the buildings are abandoned. The curatorship of the cardboard will sell the land and the plant was demolished in 1993, A complex of low cost houses were built on the site of the plant.

THE CAREERS OF THE ARQUENNES
Work study of the blue stone known as "bluestone", pelvis Ecaussines -Feluy-Arquennes tried several historians. The confusion between the villages of Feluy Arquennes and is often seen near the the two villages and the reciprocal influence that they can generate. To the knowledge of ancient quarries, Arquennes enjoys an archive important thing is to say the fund "of Lalang" and "Notary General of Brabant, a province which depended on the village. These records are registered in the General Archives of the UK in Brussels.
Excellent analysts have not failed to take advantage of such acetabular Robert and Jean-Louis Van Belle
exploitation of the stone did not have to Arquennes extension to the village she had , near Feluy as the banns were not usable always good quality and more difficult for their accessibility.
perrière activity was displayed from the thirteenth century, mainly in the center of the village at a place called "Earl's Hole" around which all activity is developed for extraction, processing and shaping of stone, including furnaces lime. Blocks Arquennes extracts as in other mining places were to be transported to The Buissière to be debited.
Thus in 1709, fourteen teachers quarries are identified in the village
activity masters career grew grace (if one may say) to incessant wars of the seventeenth century, which destroyed many buildings and gave work to the reconstruction of both public and private buildings.
the early eighteenth century, the masters of careers are reluctant to take long term leases for the difficulty of access to the stone is combined with the problem of pumping water. They state that "it is their cognizance that quairiers said village go to nothing."
around 1755, fifteen masters each had careers from May to October stonemasons, have Boulouffe Joseph Martin Brogniet Joseph Demoulin, Jerome God, Norbert Dubois, Jean-Baptiste February, Martin Le Fils, Jean Smooth, Gaspar Mondron, Mathias Monnoye William Paternotte and Nicolas, Nicolas Plamondon, Jacques Cornil Trigalet and Piron. It should be noted that some of them practiced their craft as well as Feluy Arquennes.
The census of 1764 indicates that there are two quarries in Arquennes employing 40-45 workers and producing 150 stones tailings dumped at 7,000 florins. These are obviously the careers of Count and Saint-Feuillien that are taken into account, the census ignores the small quarries that may have existed at the time. A

TRANSPORT OF STONES
Roads in very poor condition oblitérèrent largely commodity prices, the roads often narrow, poorly maintained and full of ruts were passable only good season, as the masters of careers did they employ more than ten horses to pull carts weighing moins1.500kg.
This situation lasted until the mid eighteenth century.
OF THE ROCKER FELUY
Route Mont-Saint-Jean-Nivelles-Bray was founded in 1751, but it was still waiting the year 1762 for the Empress Maria Theresa authorizes the construction of Interlocking Feluy long demanded by the teachers of career and Feluy Arquennes. Despite the construction of these roads paved obstacles to trade expansion of the stone were still being felt: the establishment of toll barriers and limiting the tonnage of transport. The two carriers
localities deposited several appeals to the Empress, they obtained satisfaction in October 1763 and could run with loads of up to 50 cubic feet is either 3500 kg. Environ.

CANAL-BRUSSELS CHARLEROI
In 1832, the construction of the canal Charleroi-Brussels was the first detonation of the economic expression of our region as envisaged in the project Vifquain engineer who said that the passage of the canal would be beneficial "for both stones Ecaussines, Arquennes, and Feluy their hydraulic lime "
Discussions relating to the expropriation of land occurred in 1827, we note that some land Arquennes belonging to the Countess of Lalang, were likely to contain stone. Disputes arose about their price, the owner believed the 3,000 guilders Bonnier, given their quality and their situation in the village center, near the farm of the Poultry, the floor of the mill, and careers.
Earth joining the "Earl's Hole" was leased to Joseph Dubois 108 guilders, it was likely to contain stone. Wanting to lower the price, as the engineer Vifquin advanced the argument that the exploitation of the stone was impossible given the proximity of the river, the recipient of the countess, Parmentier replied that there was no career without water and so abundant that it was, we still managed to remove it by machine and he could "prove that career teachers with machines, there was easier to operate in this area as elsewhere. " It took a ruling, made in Charleroi on 21-10-1828, to end disputes, land was expropriated for public purposes, and the Countess received the 2000 Fr bonnier expropriated.
RAILWAY
A bill introduced in 1846 to authorize the grant of a railway between Manage and Wavre was not good for our industry. The Municipal Council Feluy addressed the House of Representatives May 14, 1846 for rectification of the route:
"The Railway Manager Wavre must be considered as a way affected mainly industrial goods transport because it does not connect major population centers. Its layout can be easily folded so as to serve various industries encountered on the way, is the essential condition of its prosperity. Career complain that far from following this rule we had assumed the task of breaking the law by removing not only the railway career so important Feluy and Arquennes but using the same industrial unable to s' be connected by small branches, because the planned route up the channel continuously between the quarries and the railroad.
The representative Pirmez presented the report of the central section of the House during the sitting of 23 June 1846 and the bill was adopted on July 7 this year.
The section of railway was inaugurated Nivelles Manage-August 8, 1854. Supplies produced by quarries arquennaises were especially important in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and early nineteenth century.
In July 1886, King Pahaut, famous leader of Sprimont career, came in Hainaut haranguing an assembly of workers.

workers' struggles
LEAGUE WORKERS
We were fortunate to see a notebook describing the formation of a league and working Feluy Arquennes, we will deliver an outline: The
12-9-1886, a lecture by Citizen Huard to form a league working in quarries Arquennes. An interim committee is created and 150 quarry workers enroll in the league.
The committee was formed on 10 October, its president is Emile Trigalet, is the treasurer and secretary Peltier Theophilus Baptiste Huart.
By letter of 26 October, the committee apologized to the organizers of the big workers' demonstration on 31 October, given the lack of pecuniary means of the fledgling league, however, the committee sent a motion of support and stigmatizes the economic crisis.
She organized a rally in Feluy and Arquennes November 21, 1886. The group had the support of the leagues workers from surrounding villages, a flag was inaugurated, the event was punctuated by speeches and gentlemen Volders Huart. On 27 January 1887, following the reading of the proposed rates in the quarries of the meeting Soignies fellow League decides to nominate a book claim to the masters of careers.
On 16 February, took place on a report of the Assembly of Delegates of careers, the assembly decided what position to take vis-à-vis the silence of the quarry owners.
A strike is decided on February 19 by 119 voters (those under 21 years are excluded), 85 cons and 34 abstentions, but if that decision was taken and Feluy Ecaussines. The continuation of the strike is decided on March 23, but failed April 14. Patterns establish a period of unemployment. 8 July 1888, Socialist Workers League decided to suspend temporarily Arquennes its activities, the association's documents were deposited in the lounge of Jean-Baptiste Abeels, said the League's local workers. Various surveys show that
the late nineteenth century, Arquennes, operators had already reached the last benches formable. All that remained as diamond cutting sites
THE LOCKOUT OF 1909.
In May 1909, following a conflict in the career of the Levant to Ecaussines, the committee of the association employer deputed a commission of Inquiry to investigate the causes of the strike.
On June 4, 1909, 18 masters career Ecaussines, Marche-lez-Ecaussines, Feluy and Arquennes convened Special General Meeting approved the company's resistance to the demands of his staff, his solidarity with her and decided that all the rocks other than for the size will, at the discretion of the employer, to be roctées and épincées part and the boss will have sole discretion to allocate to this work, as many workers as it deems necessary. That tariffs and roctage épincage then in force continue to apply. A master
Ecaussines career began implementing this decision, clashed violently with his workers. He announced while if for June 9, conditions were not accepted, it would close its facility. They refused and were executed the boss's decision. June 14, bosses met in Perriers Manage and signed a new poster:
Masters career Ecaussines, Marche-lez-Ecaussines, Feluy and Arquennes,
Since the bosses are unable to continue, in the present circumstances, lead and organize work so that it runs effectively for themselves and the workers;
Seen as the partial strikes on constantly hampering the execution, and especially to the careers of the Levant and Thiarmont;
Whereas this injures the industry in the region;
it is in the interest of all, as workers that the bosses, that new rules are better ensure safety and regularity of work;
That the industry's future depends on it;
therefore decided
1 - Starting June 21, current work will be suspended in all quarries and for all workers , subject only to the stone masons will complete the stones they have undertaken;
2 ° - A new Regulation Workshop and an employment contract will be developed by employers and soon brought to the attention of workers, according to the law of 13 June 1906;
3 - The work can be resumed under this regulation as soon as the it will become mandatory and advice provided by posters

signed all the bosses for whom Arquennes: Bayot-Liard and Rousseau, Nestor Blase, PJ and C. Breda, L. and J. Brothers Colinet, G. and C. Hennaut, Careers of Rocq.
From June 20, 1909, the League working Feluy Arquennes and in answer to the conditions created by employers expressed the wish to see all workers employed in any manner or for career teachers, cease all work. She gives advice to workers to seek work elsewhere. Lists of subscriptions were launched to help workers in need. The quarrymen of 2050 Arquennes received paid days to 1GB. and 1961 to 2.5 days paid as compensation Br.
The conflict hardens more and more, but 13 February 1910, following a general meeting of the union-Feluy Arquennes there were 234 votes for the recovery, 55 and 0 against white workers after eight months of struggle and inflexibility patterns, lowered their arms. A conference between the employers' association represented by Henri Dethier and delegates from the Socialist unions represented by Henri Delbruyère and Marte continued, they reached a solution February 10, 1910, but the disadvantage of the proletariat who only obtained nothing substantial.
UNDER THE BOOT GERMAN
During the 1914-1918 war in quarries, all material has been removed: rails, machinery, tools. Following the lack of coal, dewatering pumps do not work and excavations have become lakes at the bottom of which lies the costly equipment.
The stone industry will not rise forever, one of stonemasons yard continues to exist.
Vant 1940, seven sites occupied 200 lapidary stone masons.
THE END OF CAREER
On 30-6-1931, the City Council is informed of an application for authorization to backfill quarries called "career of Count ',' career stolen Earth" and "Hole in canes.
Given that the result regardless of the backfill through household waste collected in various municipalities in fairly large quantities, since expected arrival by special train, there will be on site adjacent to a career yards on materials such as tin, metals, glass, paper ... the council decides to join the protests to oppose the Request ...
This project was never realized.
THE CAREERS AND CARRIERS
Careers ancient village of Arquennes are difficult to detect as soon as they were no longer used, they were often recapped, sometimes after decades without a trace, because the land and rubble considerably hampered the work in the "holes". Numerous tests
holdings took place, but the quality of the stone was not always that which was expected, or because the water hampered the work progress quickly, and some careers were quickly closed.
In 1696, an old quarry was reopened following a trial of Aldermen of Arquennes, quoting an old quarry "abandoned and buried under the recumbent vieu garden of the castle."
Some careers were in the valley form Samme. Because of the narrow dikes and creating exploitable Charleroi-Brussels canal that changed the site significantly, these quarries were filled in, it was a godsend to be able to fill these small excavations by the considerable amount of land needed to build the canal. Only the most important careers in the village center were retained, they are actually one large excavation which alone the road to Nivelles Manage founded in 1751 in fact separation.

The quarry belonged to the lords of the manor's main Arquennes became earls of Arquennes.
They did not exploit their own careers, they rented by private deeds or leases mainly, sometimes they farmed out the career for long periods, 24 in 1611, 12 years in 1634. The sub-tenant farmers sometimes rented to other merchants stone, as the widow Francois Dubois who subleases to Martin Pool, which in turn sublets part to R. Clinghermans.
's career was subdivided into several buffets This explains why we sometimes speak of 'great career' or 'old quarry', or it is located "to the old garden.
It was not until the second half of the seventeenth century to achieve the level of permanent water infiltration, thus the installation of pumps was so important. The lease stipulates that teachers 25-6-1685 career "has debvront common expence maintain, repair and clean the channels used for the water outlet of ditte quairière. In 1722, the widow of Lord Henry engagist Moors, bought a machine for pumping, driven by strong horses and dug to the bottom of a quarry tank 16 feet (4.88 m) to collect water. In 1748, his son Jean-Gilles Moors built a stone tower to act as a windmill which served as a pump for pumping water and oil tordoir. These investments

Masters career Ecaussines, Marche-lez-Ecaussines, Feluy and Arquennes,
Since the bosses are unable to continue, in the present circumstances, lead and organize work so that it runs effectively for themselves and the workers;

That the industry's future depends on it;
