Allah is not obliged

I confess, when I knew it was a work that had been selected by our book club this quarter, I was a little disappointed ... In fact, of the dozen suggested titles is the only one that does not tempt me! The subject seemed really difficult (child soldiers in Africa), the title is daunting. But one of the reasons participate in a club is to force us out of our comfort zone and make unexpected discoveries.

very first lines, I was reassured. The narrator is a boy of dozen years, which incorporates in its narrative expressions typically African. The style is lively and reminds me of one of Dany Laferrière in The Charm of the afternoon endless , I loved it.

By cons, from the middle, I have a little disappointed. The boy became a soldier by force of things happening to one faction to another in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and each time we entitled to the history of the group and its leader, which becomes a bit repetitive and not very realistic, because how this little boy who has been to school a few years can he know all this, dates to support? I even got the impression that the author himself had stalled since the narrator is completely changing his tone, is making sound like a history teacher for several pages.

Although not a huge favorite, I'm still glad I discovered this writer that I do not know. This novel corresponded perfectly to the theme of this quarter, Africa, which gives us an image far removed from the idyllic vision sometimes presented to us.
