The castle is a good Montpellier madness of the late seventeenth century significantly changed between 1858 and 1862. This building is located rue de Château Bon, in the district of the Cevennes, Montpellier, Hérault department.
History.
In August 1694, Philibert of Bon, the first president to court accounts, aid and finance from Montpellier, control a country residence for the architect of the king in Languedoc, Charles-Augustin Avila. According to scholar Robert Ferras, the sponsor is "the most prestigious Montpellier personality of the time."
Philibert Good wishes his remains to be built on the site of the "mas Terrade" agriculture that has west of Montpellier.
The building constructed between 1694 and 1700 by Aviles, a major architect of the Languedoc, is, according to some writers, copy of his contributions to the architecture of the region by the castle of campaigning, Aviler introduced in Montpellier "model home craft inspired by Val Saint-Cloud or even Marly.
Crippled with debt, Philibert de Bon, by then Marquis de Saint-Hilaire, separates the castle that bears his name before his death in 1711.
The monument then goes into various hands until being acquired in the nineteenth century by an owner who resolutely turns its appearance between 1858 and 1862. The park was redesigned and planted with rare species by landscape Bühler Denis and Eugene.
Description.
The work of the nineteenth century did not affect the structural work, the building retains the ground plane and organization provided by Charles-Augustin of Avila: the body of a central building surrounded two short wings. This is the principle used in other follies of Montpellier same time - the castle and castle Flaugergues Bionne - quoiqu'ici reversed, both wings growing on entrance court and not garden.
The outward appearance is greatly changed, however, making the design of Aviler unrecognizable. Languedoc roof with long tails curved tile has been replaced by a mansard roof with slate, ornamented dormers framing Napoleon III. The two corner turrets, employment similar to those used in Castle Lavagnac, were adorned with a steeple. The walls are adorned with a decoration in the style of Louis XIII.
Former center of an agricultural area like most Montpellier follies, the castle on the other hand was amputated from its native environment: the commons became a housing, and the park of 5 , 2 acres bought by the town of Montpellier is now in the public domain.
The property is currently on the property market Montpellier (February 2011) at a price of 2.1 million euros.
According to announcements of sale, the building had 17 rooms a total area of 900 m2 on a large base of vaulted rooms. The garden (1.13 ha) has among other pools and a fountain "of Diana."
